So I'm looking at building a second skate out of an old ski and a blank skateboard deck.  I'm looking for recommendations for ski length, truck options, grip, etc.  Should I mount the ski in the same place the ski boot would have been?

Also I've never done any t-bolting...  So suggestions on that or resources I can use would be very helpful.

Also looking for anyone in the Bozeman/Big Sky area that skates...  As far as I can tell there is NO snowskate scene here.

Any suggestions are much appreciated...

......uh........I can understand the diy spirit but.......things are so good right now with snowskate options that you are really doing yourself a diservice by spending time on a skate that will only be so-so. that being said, I would look for a little kids ski around 90-100 cm and use that. you want a soft flex and bigger skis will be too stiff. good luck

Yeah man I already have a few skates...  This is just more of a fun project and I've ridden some ski-skates before that were super fun and performed really well.

good to hear,  by all means mess around with this. I've never used a cut down ski before just ski boards so can't really say where to cut a ski down at.

Buy a ralston mini ski. You can put skatedecks ontop its the only snowskate worth your time

Bjorn lived in Bozeman for awhile, he lived there when they filmed the jux doc, not sure if any snowskaters are left. For making boards Elkins has been hyped on cutting kids snowboards down, you just need to figure out how to retrofit edges or do without. There was a company called barefoot that essentially mounted a fullsize ski to a skateboard deck, they worked but were not the most efficient, Try different things and see what works.

Some of my favorite times are still watching someone step on the swizelstick frankenskate and snowskate for the first time.  It is a 10 year old snowskate with a Decept top deck, cut down 2x4 trucks, wood screws on top and stainless flathead screws countersunk into the base on an old snolerblade.  We used to ride that thing at the resort.  You just reminded me that about a month ago I bought some inserts with P-tex on the bottom.  They should be here sometime soon.  A buddy of mine made a skate last year with t-nuts exposed on the bottom like really old snowboards.

I recommend a ski at least 90 cm and mounting the trucks at the wheelbase of the skateboard just inside the kick of the tip and tale of the deck.  You might want to mount the deck back a little if your ski is really long.

For the money wood blocks work for trucks but, if you already have a few snowskates my suggestion is to get your self a set of Rockers and use what you take off.  Go for the EVA Grip sheets are 10 x 42 so there is enough to do a couple of skates if you want.

Here is one set of instructions for installing T-nuts  http://snowboarding.transworld.net/1000022554/how-to/cracking-t-nut-installation/

These just in!
